"We're worried that your pizza... is not up to standards.  You gotta make some changes, capisce?  You won't be able to roll no dough without fingers, eh, Frankie?"

"These norms protect one of the most ancient and most important gastronomic traditions," said Antonio Pace, owner of one of Naples' oldest pizza restaurants and the president of a pizza-makers' association.

What the fuck. Pizza was invented in New York City in the 19th century.

Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pizza): The earliest pizzeria opened in 1830 at Via Port'Alba 18 in Naples and is still in business today.

The same article says pizza was first sold in NYC in 1897, by Italian immigrants.

That's correct -- pizza was invented in Italy. It was merely perfected in America.

All right, I'm being sarcastic. A good homemade Margherita pizza can be among the finest foods ever created, and its simplicity -- crust, crushed tomatoes, cheese, and basil -- makes most other pizzas look like wretched excess. Often they are.

Still, I'm no purist. One of my other favorite pizza combinations is mushroom and pineapple. "I think this is the first mushroom and pineapple we've ever made" said the guy at Amore Pizza to me, and now that we've moved north, they'll probably never make another. So I'm weird. Sue me.

The fact that people eat pineapple, much less put it on pizza, is proof that God has a sense of humor

Interesting.

I had no idea that pizza was restaurant food, much less royal cuisine, in Naples before it became a hot item in New York. I always thought it was just what you did with leftovers!

I loved the episode of Remember WENN where everybody was so excited about this mysterious new Italian food coming to Pittsburgh.

No-one expects the International Pizza Standards Organisation!

"Is this pizza IPSO compliant?"
"Well, it's de facto standards compliant"
"So it is, IPSO facto, a pizza?"

Thanks, I'm here all week.

Electrify the ocean.

Or wait for me to come to Sna Francisco. I had a dream last night, actually, that I was visiting SF for some reason, and was all panicked because it was my last night there and I hadn't called you to arrange going for beers yet. Given that I'm unlikely to be in SF in the near future, though, your tasering ambitions may go unfulfilled for a while. And when I do visit, I'll be bringing my attack rabbit. Fair warning.

I do plan to go to Oz sometime before i die, but Europe is first on my list.

I'm all for it

I'm very happy that this came about. I have two simple reasons for this:

  • we have a very allergic child and when we are in Naples if we eat at a pizzeria that offers "pizza DOC" we know that he won't react. In Belgium however people put all kind of stuff into the pizza that does not belong there. Eggs for starters. That makes pizza a potentially lethal meal.

  • Honestly pizza from Naples is different from pizza from pizza-h*t. It has the same name, but is something else. In original pizza a lot of the goodness comes from the simple ingredients and the skill of making of the pizza. In pizza-h*t pizza the goodness comes from the toppings, the base is just a container.

I see no conflict there :-).
