[livejournal.com profile] en_ki brought to my attention [livejournal.com profile] elsejournal, an effort to decentralize journals.  Since i have a genetic defect that precludes any possibility of generating useful code, i'll probably just bring my typical idea-based energy, throw out some documents, and in general irritate people when i point out, "UR DOIN IT RONG."  Because that worked so well back when my tilted windmill was Usenet II.

I know some of you care.  And of those, some might actually have the time to put something up.

Why not just re-implement FidoNet?!

Why not...both are still in use, but unlike Usenet, FIDO doesn't lend itself to being nothing more than a large anonymous porn/pirate distribution network these days.

I was already designing something like this for the past week but it's going to be OS X 10.5 only unless I want to go to wxPython or Java...

Ooh! Ooh! It totally needs an NNTP interface! That would make it PERFECT!

Wasn't 2000, like, eight years ago?

Alternatively, we could just stick pins in our eyes.

What's the difference between a decentralized journal system and people just posting their journals on their own Web sites?

Support for a decentralised userbase? That's about the only thing I can think of.

Well, you're going to have to do most of the work locally anyway if you don't want to trust random other nodes to be able to read your journal; and stuff like OpenID can already handle the parts that don't need to be local.

Well, the "hiding"/locking/whatever still needs to be done on the node that owns the entry, but I suspect there needs to be decent support for OpenID mechanisms (and, maybe, some sort of nickname propagation).

There might be a want for smooth integration of multiple journals, but that can probably be done via some sort of registration mechanism and nasty DNS hacks (effectively mimicking userid.livejournal.com).
