Did the WTC towers HAVE to be labelled "9/11", though? Shouldn't the fact that they're the WTC towers have given away the symbolism clearly enough for anyone literate enough to pick up a newspaper?
I'd've made the same comment about the W on the chimp's arse, and then I considered the phrase, lowest common denominator. Why yes, I am an over-educated elitist, why do you ask?
The "W" is warranted, though, as the monkey could not possibly be properly interpreted if it wasn't labelled. I am not even sure I'd be able to recognize it having a face at all. There's just some sort of abstract Rorschach ink blot where the face is supposed to be.
The rules of political-cartoon iconography is that you can't have too many explicit labels. Herblock was particularly fond of them; I remember drawing a parody of Herblock many years ago, an overly complex scene in which absolutely every object had some label of its allegorical referent written on it. I don't think anyone got it.
Also, Kong's leg is off the south tower of the World Trade Center to indicate that he has just jumped from one to another. (http://www.fullyarticulated.com/KongPosters.html)

He's climbing the 9/11 disaster every time he's threatened.
See.
I mean, I know you get it, cuz you're asking, but it's not the WTC he's climbing that makes the point. It's 9/11. See?
they really could be ANY towers. Sears tower. Washington Monument. Big tree in zoo. It's the 9/11 thing he climbs up when he gets threatened.
Really it's that simple (: Which is the brilliance of it (:

Date: 2005-07-02 02:26 pm (UTC)I wish I had my Herblock book. Since I have moved twice in the past 3 months and gone through everything I own, I know I do not have it.
I will need to find said book somewhere and get here.
(Here being harder than 'the states' unfortunately.)
