The rules of political-cartoon iconography is that you can't have too many explicit labels. Herblock was particularly fond of them; I remember drawing a parody of Herblock many years ago, an overly complex scene in which absolutely every object had some label of its allegorical referent written on it. I don't think anyone got it.
Also, Kong's leg is off the south tower of the World Trade Center to indicate that he has just jumped from one to another. (http://www.fullyarticulated.com/KongPosters.html)

I will need to find said book somewhere and get here.
(Here being harder than 'the states' unfortunately.)
