The missus and i will be eating here (PELIGRO: Flash).  I am pondering how much i'll let myself spend on wine.

I don't know why that bit of W. H. Auden popped into my head for this entry's subject.  That's what my look suggested.  I'm rather pleased with this selfportrait, especially because it's a phonecam shot.

OK, so it's really Alex Lifeson's adaptation of Auden's work.  So sue me.

It must be something in the air, because [livejournal.com profile] also_huey and [livejournal.com profile] tongodeon have both posted recently about obnoxious online behavior.  Anyway, I've spent the last few days watching Steve Sailer finally goad [livejournal.com profile] malcolmgladwell into acknowledging his harassing bloviation (and that of the parroting minions that straggled in Sailer's wake), and also participating in the PROTRADE boards, where the average participant has a poor command of spelling, grammar, cogent writing, and (strangely enough) sports.  I had my fun mocking both Sailer and his clones (Sailer has been carrying a grudge against Gladwell since "Blink" came out, and established himself in Gladwell's TypePad with logorrheic sophistry in comments, fueled purely by his self-love, almost as soon as Gladwell started it), and the cluebies on PROTRADE.

Today, though i find myself drained and uncomfortable.  It's too much on my mental well-being to engage in such protracted negativity.  Sailer is an expert at empty debate, and the PROTRADE rabble... well, they're sports fans, you know?  So, i'm done wrestling with pigs.  It was a bit of a thrill to reach back in the old bucket of piss and vinegar, and recall my days on USENET where i was the king of jerks.  But i just can't handle working hard at being a jerk anymore.  I'll have to leave that to Sailer, and PROTRADE user "slate".

It seems that my three most popular quotes are:

  • Sanity is like money; you should just have enough to get by.  Any more and you turn into a freak.
  • Pretty, smart, sane: Pick two.
  • If you don't use emacs, you're a pathetic, mewling, masochistic weakling and i can't be bothered to convert you.
The first one i really like, the second is a cheap hack, and the third is so over the top, but that's probably why people like it.

[livejournal.com profile] tongodeon and [livejournal.com profile] opadit asked this a few weeks ago.  I've been mulling it over and i realize i have two:

  • Trimming my mustache.  I have to make sure that the hair does not creep over my lips, and that there aren't any stray long hairs.  I will do this constantly, sometimes even at work.
  • Reorganizing my wine 'racks'.  My 'cellar' consists of two wine boxes on their sides, a polystyrene 12-bottle holder that i cut down so it would fit on the shelf, one modular Lincoln-Logesque rack, and one wire rack i got from [livejournal.com profile] davewsmith_blog.  I organize the wine so they're together by varietal, older vintages on top.  But do the black muscat and zinfandel port go with the dessert wines or with the red wines?  How do i position blends?  I only have two syrahs; what should i put in the available third spot?
