While cruising through Wikipedia, i found this:

Pahawh Hmong was the product of a native messianic movement, based on the idea that, throughout history, God had given the Hmong power though the gift of writing, and revoked it as divine retribution.
Humans sure find some of the damnedest things to believe in.

interesting; self-imposed aphasia on a society wide level.

tower of babel is more where God changed the languages so no one group could understand the other, thus disrupting their ability be one cohesive entity. they didn't finish the tower and it was perhaps the precursor to nationalistic enmity, or at least allowed prejudicial hatred to grow and flourish. God never took the ability away to speak or write.
