While cruising through Wikipedia, i found this:

interesting; self-imposed aphasia on a society wide level.

tower of babel is more where God changed the languages so no one group could understand the other, thus disrupting their ability be one cohesive entity. they didn't finish the tower and it was perhaps the precursor to nationalistic enmity, or at least allowed prejudicial hatred to grow and flourish. God never took the ability away to speak or write.
