Can anyone provide a translation for the above characters?  Hmm, now that i look at it, it looks like the one on the left is upside-down...

Rather than waiting for a translation, you should immediately run out and have them tattooed on your arms. Preferably by somebody who doesn't know Chinese, and so will botch the characters and turn "I'm an awesome soccer player" into "I'm an awesome prostitute".

How helpful is this? The one on the left is, in fact, upside down. I saw the character on the top (here, the bottom) done in a short documentary film about a calligraphy artist, screened at the Metropolitan Museum of Art sometime last fall.

That said, I don't know what it means.

They are currently both the right way up. If you trace the lines in the little squares, you'll see they are the same - left stroke first (top to bottom), then top (left to right) and right (top to bottom) as a single curved stroke, then the bottom (technically left to right, but here kinda stylised as part of the second stroke).

I can have them translated tomorrow if you can wait.

My kanji is terrible, and my Chinese is non-existent, but I can tell you that the one on the left is not upside down.

I read this after I posted below. Thanks for the links. When I followed them, the words came out as "ru yi"--"as wished", and "jijin"--"auspicious".

As far as I can tell, none of them are upside down. The top left is "ru", which I know as part of the word "ruguo"--"if". The one below that looks like "Yi", but I am unsure because of the font. The other two I don't know. Sorry.

A co-worker of mine says that the left one translates roughly to "good things coming your way", and the right one "good fortune".

In pinyin: ji2 xian2 ru2 yi4. Tones could be wrong, however.

General translation: peace, luck, prosperity, blah blah blah... you know it.

www.zhongwen.com is a great resource, if you know how to use it. Calligraphy is a pain in the ass to read though, especially for us foreigners. :-)
