I never could relate to people who really got into the badness of certain forms of art, like Mystery Science Theater 3000 or the cult of Rocky Horror Picture Show.  But that changed once i watched a few episodes of the epically bad CSI: Miami.  The writing is sub-mediocre, even for Hollywood; the main characters not only have an extremely narrow set of behavior, but they are only allowed one or two facial expressions (David Caruso's two facial expressions are with and without sunglasses, if that counts as two); the non-recurring characters are acted with the care you'd see in your typical high school play.  And this lily is gilt with the choice of an H2 as the official crime lab vehicle.  I can't recommend this show to anyone; however, for those of you who revel in experiencing awful stuff, it might just be up your alley.

[livejournal.com profile] wacky_hijinx informed me some time ago that Kevin O'Neill would be signing yesterday, so i dropped by and picked up a copy of O'Neill's and Alan Moore's latest League of Extraordinary Gentlemen graphic novel, Black Dossier.  O'Neill was very kind and drew something on the first page for all comers.  He asked me what i wanted, and i said, "Surprise me," and i got a really nice Miss Murray.  I'm still reading BD; it is, well... it's mad.  It includes a set of 3-D glasses.  That's all i'll say for now.

Week 6: still not king employed.  Now that we're essentially in holiday season, it would be too optimistic to hope for a job before 2008.

[livejournal.com profile] palecur and i will be leaving tomorrow afternoon to go to Los Angeles to see Soda Stereo.  I believe that it's fair to say that they're the band i've been wanting to see play for the longest time.  We'll be back in time for Thanksgiving.

Uh, check your mail. I hope I sent it to a real address, not a spam trap.

I share your fascination with the awesome awfulness of CSI: Miami.

So glad to know I'm not alone.

I watch CSI:Miami religiously, having somehow been addicted to it in its first season. But as I'll tell anyone who asks: I don't watch it for its brains, but its looks. It's a show with so very much more style than substance, and if you want to show off your new HDTV, you could hardly do better than the opening location shots of Miami. Then you get some hot girls in bikinis, and then some contrived action scene (which will end up as part of an even more contrived coincidence of some kind). Best of all, everyone looks good-- hell, you don't even get people with supernormal looks on the show, just superhumanly-gorgeous people. And then David Caruso makes an unbearable pun. And then the credits open the show. There's no pretense at reality, just a beauty pageant that happens to have the format of a police procedural. Way better than CSI:NY, which has the look and feel of a roll in the gutter with a knife in your kidney, and frankly better than CSI:CSI's "we've reinvented the police procedural, now let's reinvent narrative direction" crap from the last season or two. The original CSI:CSI's still the best, but slipping.

Alan Moore's latest League of Extraordinary Gentlemen graphic novel

Did you catch Alan Moore, Dan Clowes, and Art Spiegelman on the Simpsons last Sunday? I'd link a YouTube clip, but Fox has already gotten them pulled for copyright violation.

The only way CSI:Miami is remotely watchable is to play a drinking game during the show. When David Caruso's glasses go on, one shot. When they come off, one shot. When they go on when they never came off in the first place, two shots. When they come off without your knowing how they got on his face (and logically, you should have seen it), two shots. All these things occur in the show quite often (from the few episodes I've seen) and with much alcohol in one's system, the low quality of the show's acting and writing is much less noticeable.

All those crime show bosses are engaged in a contest to find out who hates criminals more. One of the criterion for selecting the winner is who spends the most time glowering.

the cast can't help the fact that the show has AWFUL writers, who now want more money for their shitty work. David Caruso is actually an exceptional actor - having infused Horatio with a spirit, a will, a personality and even, yes, a little ham. He's like a real guy, right down to his annoying traits (soj's). Had anyone else been in the role of H, this show would have folded years ago.

Well, i certainly never said the principals' acting was awful (it's the NPCs [for lack of a better term] who suck). And it's not the show's writers' fault that the show's producers choose to retain them.

Caruso might be an exceptional actor, but he certainly doesn't seem to have much of a knack for picking good projects.

agreed

True...David picks some awful things, other than Proof of Life, which was a good movie despite Crowe and Ryna, and in which he was very good, very physical. I enjoyed watching him in that. He's good in most of the other pictures he's in, in my opinion, the movies themselves are just not that good, again my opinion. King of New York was pretty good, as was he - very powerful and determined - Body Count he was funny and unforgivable all at once, but the movie sucked. I dont know. I wish he could get into another A movie and have the chance to stretch what I hope and think are some serious chops.
