I watch CSI:Miami religiously, having somehow been addicted to it in its first season. But as I'll tell anyone who asks: I don't watch it for its brains, but its looks. It's a show with so very much more style than substance, and if you want to show off your new HDTV, you could hardly do better than the opening location shots of Miami. Then you get some hot girls in bikinis, and then some contrived action scene (which will end up as part of an even more contrived coincidence of some kind). Best of all, everyone looks good-- hell, you don't even get people with supernormal looks on the show, just superhumanly-gorgeous people. And then David Caruso makes an unbearable pun. And then the credits open the show. There's no pretense at reality, just a beauty pageant that happens to have the format of a police procedural. Way better than CSI:NY, which has the look and feel of a roll in the gutter with a knife in your kidney, and frankly better than CSI:CSI's "we've reinvented the police procedural, now let's reinvent narrative direction" crap from the last season or two. The original CSI:CSI's still the best, but slipping.
