Sabrage is a neat trick.  However, there's the right way to do it, and the wrong way.

I'm amused the title of the second one includes the word "American". Heh.

I notice that the Sparkling Wine (American) video linked above has a companion video, about opening Champagne (French) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3QEgLXodM1g), which is also funny, if a bit less dramatic.

Other articles about this critical survival skill have claimed that different manufactures of wine bottle break in different ways, specifically warning against trying it with American champagne. So the origin of the wine is not merely tangential information.

Thank you, Internet, for blessing me with your endless bounty of trivia!

When the champagne bottles come marching down the street looking to kill my children and steal my women, i will be ready. Oh yes.

But are you doing your part to privatize the Zombie Champagne Bottle Hunting NOW????

Ok, so maybe holing up in the crib for three straight days of StarCraft, Inuyasha, and Christopher Hitchen's "God Is Not Great" after the Psycho Trauma of "Omega Man" may not have been a good work around...

You go to war with the cutlery you have, not the cutlery you want.

The way people open wine bottles in Steven Brust's Dragaera novels doesn't seem so goofy now.

When I went to cancun a few years ago, I noticed all the bartenders would open beer bottles with a knife, in a similar fashion. So of course, when I get home, I want to do this trick myself. The results were not as dramatic as the "ugly american" video, but still a failure nonetheless. I have tried to open a beer bottle with a knife exactly two times, and probably never again. I may try the sabre tho, if I ever get one.
