At a bit past midnight, i was notified that one of the ERP database servers was down. Turns out one of the DBAs decided to reboot it without notifying the Unix team... fine, whatever. Oops, it didn't come back all the way up; one of the filesystems is missing in action. All of the drives are visible, but the volume manager metadevice won't mount or fsck or nuthin'. So i asks the DBAs, "Do youse needs this now, or can it sit until daylight?" And, of course, they needs it now. Well, fine, call the VAR's NOC and have them ring us up Sun tech support. Uh, we've only got bronze support, which means tech support during business hours only. Fine, that's normal, i want an uplift. Uh, Sun doesn't wanna do an uplift. At this point, it's about 01:30 and i'm becoming very, very cranky because i tried to get a hold of my boss and failed on all attempts. Then i realize, hey, why the hell is this box so consarned important, anyway? If they rebooted it at their whim, it's not a production box, and if it's not a production box, why the fuck am i playing whack-a-mole with Sun support in the wee hours of the morning? So at 02:30 i give up and tell the DBAs, "We deal with this in the morning. Cope."

At 07:00, one of the financial people calls me with a complaint about network connectivity. Even in my impoverished mental state, i can figure out that a network problem necessarily requires the intervention of a... NETWORK PERSON. I suggest he call the network guy on the East Coast, as it is 10:00 and the odds that he is awake and functioning are much greater than for the West Coast guys. I then take my sodden self to my car and drive to the train station... except there is one hell of a traffic jam on the way there. Well, fuck this. I go home, i shower, i put in the service call and have someone else deal with it, i have some beef stew and some coffee. And now i sit here, wired yet comatose, too tired to be cranky. I oughta go to fuckin' bed, is what i oughta fuckin' do.

Repeat every fourth night for 4 years, except that you don't get to turn the car around and go home in the morning. Now how does it feel?

I swear, most doctors coming out of training should be incarcerated, not licensed.

It was pretty bad for a while, but it's been so good lately that the occasional blowup really irritates me. 3 years ago, it was just part of the job.

Well, DBAs without any knowledge of sysadmin stuff are evil...

Kinda Makes me miss the place. You deal with idiots rebooting computers at midnight. And at the same time, halfway across the US at midnight Im dealing with Inmates that are fighting, having to lay the smack down with some totally bad 5.5% OC pepperspray, and in the process getting sprayed by another officer on 'accident'. Damn, sometimes I miss working in computers. On a lighter note, people turn to me for computer help, which is a nice attempt to make me feel somewhat wanted around 200+ Inmates.
