Plastic explosives placed inside the luggage of a French air passenger as part of a botched police training exercise were still missing last night.

A bag containing 150g of explosives was deliberately placed in the luggage of an unknown traveller at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris, but sniffer dogs undergoing training failed to spot it.

I passed through de Gaulle in the summer of 2003, and this doesn't surprise me a bit. When I put my bag up on the conveyor to pass it through the x-ray machine, the security rastafarian wasn't even looking at his monitor, he was too busy chatting with another guard. I stood and watched him from the other side of the gate, and he let about 10 people pass through without a single glance at his screen. When I mentioned it to one of the counter agents, they just shrugged.

And on a slightly-related note, a colleague of mine had passed through that same terminal at de Gaulle about 15 minutes prior to its structural collapse earlier this year.

I heard that ONE spotted it and another didn't, so they were gonna try and send it through again, and that's when they realized ...it was gone.

Hey, if they can lose explosives, I wonder if they communicate effectively to all personnel which passengers are getting explosives placed in their bags, or if random folks are unwittingly labelled terrorists by mistake. Ha ha!

Great. Passed through Paris Orly this morning. Didn't get asked if I packed my own bags. Haven't found any suspicious packages in my baggage yet.
