All right, who the hell thought it was OK for Brad Templeton to become EFF's chairman?  And why the hell did they not consult me first?

Oh man, I hadn't thought about that in years!

Was I smarter then, or did the smaller Internet's issues seem to make more sense, or what?

I know as I've gotten older, I've taken a lot of it less seriously. Really cool stuff continues to happen, but it's almost never the really cool stuff that I thought was going to happen, and most of the grandious plans turn out to be bad or impractical ideas.

Usenet is also now a backwater filled with old coots sitting on their porches and chewing the fat with each other while periodically tripping kids with their canes. I say this as one of the old coots. I'm not sure it's necessarily a bad thing, either. It's kind of nice to use a technology that's not being constantly put to the service of the "ooo, shiny" brigade.

However, it does mean that Usenet has turned into Fidonet. Which is highly amusing.

Yeah, the with-a-whimper fade of Usenet is kind of sad, too. I had high hopes that it would sink under the radar and become both usable and witsome again. Sadly, the Web seems to have sucked away all the cream along with the cruft.

Eh, give it some time. It's not clear to me that that won't still happen. There were years in there where I could have sworn IRC was permanently dead, and yet, it's healthier and in more widespread use now than I think it ever was.

There are still little islands of sanity. I recommend the alt.fan.cecil-adams
