All right, who the hell thought it was OK for Brad Templeton to become EFF's chairman?  And why the hell did they not consult me first?

From: [identity profile] therobbergirl.livejournal.com
Maybe it's actually a very clever move on the part of the EFF to rid themselves of their joke status.
From: [identity profile] also-huey.livejournal.com
The thing I don't understand about the EFF is how they can start with ideas that sound so wonderful ("Let's build an anonymous proxy network so chinese dissidents can get their ideas out!") and have them turn into such fucked-up idiotic nightmares of stupidity ("We've built an anonymous proxy network so child pornographers and identity thieves can no longer be tracked by law enforcement!").

Anonymous is as anonymous does. You can't have an anonymous network that's just for $FAVORED_OPPRESSED_GROUP; once you strip off identifiers, well, that could be anyone on the other end of the line, Dr. Wen Xian Freedomfighter or Creepy Uncle Kiddietoucher. (ps: it's not impossible for categories to overlap).

Thank you. I was going to have to lay some smack down on someone for not using their head. Your response was much, much clearer and less offensive.
From: [identity profile] also-huey.livejournal.com
Just so long as it's Templeton who you're planning on smacking down. I'll bring the cricket bat, the concertina wire, and the Dave's Insanity Sauce. And I'll help.

Could be worse. Could be Eric Raymond.

Invoking Eric Raymond is the Godwin's Law of the new millennium.

Ah... the good old days, when USEFOR was full of blue-sky proposals on how to fix all the problems exposed by some weird private application of... er, when USEFOR had people who couldn't stop arguing with John Stanley... er, when neat new ideas were more important than documenting existing reality... er....

It seems, in retrospect, that we managed to replace Brad Templeton rather effectively.

And don't let me catch you quoting Clarinet articles, young man! Sharing music, that's one thing, but you'd better respect my copyright!

quoting Clarinet articles

Oh man, I hadn't thought about that in years!

Was I smarter then, or did the smaller Internet's issues seem to make more sense, or what?

I know as I've gotten older, I've taken a lot of it less seriously. Really cool stuff continues to happen, but it's almost never the really cool stuff that I thought was going to happen, and most of the grandious plans turn out to be bad or impractical ideas.

Usenet is also now a backwater filled with old coots sitting on their porches and chewing the fat with each other while periodically tripping kids with their canes. I say this as one of the old coots. I'm not sure it's necessarily a bad thing, either. It's kind of nice to use a technology that's not being constantly put to the service of the "ooo, shiny" brigade.

However, it does mean that Usenet has turned into Fidonet. Which is highly amusing.

Yeah, the with-a-whimper fade of Usenet is kind of sad, too. I had high hopes that it would sink under the radar and become both usable and witsome again. Sadly, the Web seems to have sucked away all the cream along with the cruft.

Eh, give it some time. It's not clear to me that that won't still happen. There were years in there where I could have sworn IRC was permanently dead, and yet, it's healthier and in more widespread use now than I think it ever was.

aw, Brad's not that bad. then again, mostly i remember him from eniac, and his comically stiff flamewars with Greg back when dinosaurs walked the earth.

in less than a year, it will be my 20th net anniversary. i'm inclined to feel at least some small affection for anyone who's been around longer than i have, even if they're kind of a pain in the ass.

even, i shudder to admit, Eric Raymond. i wonder if he still plays that song about being naked. after 14 years of being out of his horndogging range, i find myself actually nostalgic for it.

baby, don't you bring me down
mama, don't you drag me down
you look more together in your altogether
now, baby, don't you bring me down

I can't believe you wrote a post that has brought up both the name of Brad Templeton and Eric Raymond. (: OMG. OMG. OMG. My past has just reached up and slapped me in the face!

Brad's really not all that bad. And he does really believe in what he's doing, though sometimes it's not all that clear just what it is he is doing.

Well. Um....see....I used to run into them from time to time. In fact, I still get invited to Brad's parties and see him at various other parties. I've pretty much successfully avoided ESR in recent years.

Several years from now, after Brad passes the EFF torch to Maddy and she eventually retires, the glory years will be over and the EFF will drift off into irrelevancy.
