IIRC, the chain "Batteries Plus" will also take your old batteries for recycling, no charge. At least they have for me whenever I've bought a car battery there.

In CA, you can bring your old car battery to wherever you buy the new one. You get some cash off, too.

does anybody identify places that actually recycle them?

The Ulster County Recycling Center collected batteries in big barrels for about 10 years until finally giving up on ever finding a buyer for them, and dumped 'em all in the landfill a few years ago. If the greenies of fucking Woodstock couldn't find a place to recycle them, who can?

my question is serious, not rhetorical. I don't want 'em in my landfill either! If there's a list of contacts for actual battery recycling out there anywhere, I'd love to be able to direct the New Paltz and Saugerties recycling people to it.

Yeah, it's just more research i'd have to do. I would be somewhat surprised if all the places around here didn't actually hand off to a real recycling joint, this being California and all.
