This album has some groundbreaking soundwork for the time, which mostly survives to this day without sounding dated.  I'm more familiar with his newer work, so this album was a bit surprising in that it wasn't as, well, poppy.  "Games Without Frontiers", a track that i've heard on the radio for a long time, showed more depth when i was able to listen to it more closely and on something better than my car's radio.

This is their debut album, and i like it a bit less than their followup, Together We're Heavy; the songs aren't as well developed, and some of them sound like they could have been demos for songs on TWH.  The sound is very similar; the music is mostly cheerful, joyous, and uplifting "choral symphonic pop/rock".  The final track, "Section 10 (A Long Day)" is 36'30" and consists of monotonic droning by frontman Tim DeLaughter.  Dumb.

I bought the CD used at Rasputin Music and when i opened the case, there was a four-track promo disc under the album's disc that contained remixes of two of the album tracks and two live tracks. It was a nice surprise; i'm not usually a fan of remixes, but these were OK.

By the way, their new album, The Fragile Army, is coming soon, and you can follow their Weblog at [livejournal.com profile] thefragilearmy.

My final music acquisition in this batch is another album of Soundscapes from Unca Bobby.  It is more organized than his others; two suites, "The Outer Darkness" and "The Gates of Paradise" are split in two sections which are ordered alternately.  The first section of TOD has ten parts and each is distinctively and evocatively named ("The Outer Darkness", "Wailing II", "Black Light").  This is followed by the first section of TGoP, which contains two parts.  The second section of TOD is just one ten-minute part, "In Fear and Trembling of the Lord", and if you've ever heard Fripp's Soundscapes, you can pretty well imagine what this sounds like.  The second section of TGoP (another two-parter) closes out the album in a pleasant and enjoyable manner.  A Blessing of Tears is still my favorite of his and the one Soundscapes album i'd recommend to anyone.

Bonus review!  Andrea Echeverri of Aterciopelados released her solo album last year after giving birth for the first time.  Her album has 12 songs (plus a remixed hidden track), half to her lover and half to her daughter.  Some of them definitely sound like a couple of Aterciopelados songs.  One song is a duet with her mother, and i love her mom's voice (it's really, er, maternal).

Centavo played an excellent game against Saharok, which finished in a 4-4 tie.  We only had one sub, and we could've won had we had another warm body.  The guys played sparkling defense, giving Saharok few chances, which means i had fewer chances to screw up.  OK, i played well, only (harmlessly) fumbling the ball once.  The final goal i gave up might have been avoided if i'd challenged the shooter, but i'd just stopped a hard shot and he got the rebound, so i think it might just be hindsight and wishful thinking that i had a chance at stopping him.  We dominated them the first half but suffered from mediocre finishing, then spent the second half running a bit tired (and thus let them score three times).

This should've been a twofer, except i spent all night yesterday listening to my new music and COMPLETELY FORGOT my game like an idiot.  Argggh.  To make it worse, we lost a close (but well-played, the guys said) game to Los Teporochos, 4-2.  Now i've put my whole schedule into my phone's organizer so i'll be reminded.  Unless i lose my phone.  Right.
