Today The Boy, Kim and i went to Dark Carnival to meet with our friend Penny for her birthday. The store has very cool atmosphere (as well as temperature... brrr). The Boy found a Green Lantern graphic novel written by Larry Niven. I discovered horror books written by twohitwonder-cum-morningradioshowhost Greg "Captain Tin Foil Hat" Kihn. Kim discovered a new short story by Katherine Dunn. Penny discovered Steven Brust's The Phoenix Guards (well, i pointed her at it after she asked for a starting point for Brust). We then had an early dinner at Nan Yang, Burmese food at the Oakland/Berkeley border. Good stuff, but their food is white-man hot, so we'll have to ask for a Scoville upgrade next time. We accompanied the food with a gewürztraminer from Husch Vineyards; nice, with a slight tingle up front, but lacking a bit in the finish. Then again, i think i was in the mood for a slightly sweeter wine (i asked for a Madrona gewürz, but they were out).

In other news, tukro.com is ready for your trenchant comments, although it seems to be semi-functional, much like the site it parodies. Who knew?

You forgot to mention the other book I bought, Ombria In Shadow (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0441010164/qid=1076300160//ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl14/102-4140305-5058513?v=glance&s=books&n=507846), by Patricia A. McKillip. My friend Penny highly recommended it, but you forgot it because you said it was a "girly" book. Well, pooey on youey.

We also exchanged gifts, because Penny and I hadn't a chance to see each other for xmas. I gave her a wind chime and a glass bobble thingy for her garden, which she loves to spend time in. She gave me a really cute beaded coin purse in the shape of a dolphin, and a copy of The Word Detective (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0452282640/qid=1076300303/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/102-4140305-5058513?v=glance&s=books), by Evan Morris.

Penny is the best!

Dark Carnival? On Claremont?

You were so very much in my territory. A little more planning, and this could have been really dangerous.

Yes, i did consider buggin' ya, but Penny is a bit shy, so i erred on the cautious side.

I will have to go up there and have you buy me a crêpe or something.

I read it after some friends decided I should. "You like Dumas, and you like scifi! This is your book!" I didn't. It was unimaginative, long and boring. Alas.

Quel dommage!

Your friends did you a disservice. If the case had been, "You like Dumas, and you like Steven J. Brust!" then this would, indeed, have been your book. Despite RonE's assertion, I don't think this is a good intro to Brust-- the Jhereg series would be a much better place to start, with The Phoenix Guard as a lovely dessert.

It depends on the person. I think Penny'd appreciate it. I certainly didn't expect to like TPG, but it just made me giggle a lot.

Now, Freedom & Necessity... that book was impossible.

And The Sun, the Moon, And the Stars was no walk in the park, either.

God damn it... you're some sort of cryptofascist, aren't you? TSTMATS is a great, great book; in fact, i bought myself a new copy yesterday at Dark Carnival.

Crytpofascist? Why, I thought I'd been completely straightforward about my fascist leanings....

This does not excuse TSTMATS being largely a wank in the dark-- not a bad thing, mind you, but not exactly a work of art.

Suffice it to say that you are WRONG, WRONG, WRONG.

Wow! That looks like a really cool book store.

Sometimes the consumer whore in me wants to live where there's a really big population base just so I can go to places like that whenever I feel like it. I know you can order anything and everything off the internet, but it's never the same as walking down a bookstore aisles and browsing. I guess I'm one of those crummy luddites holding back the wonderful world of commerce who fetishizes objects and will always prefer printed books and comics over digital.

you deserve to eat a butt.
