question for you writer types

I have an interest (extremely unlikely to realize at the moment, but nonetheless, it is there) in writing a book about certain formative events in the history of one of Frank Herbert's (non-Dune) characters. Given that his son is milking the living shit out of the Dune universe, what exactly would i need to do were i to actually write this book and want to publish it?

After that, consult Nolo Press for books on copyright. See if you can find some sort of standard letter that you can customize and mail to the copyright holder, requesting permission.
You might also want to check with a lawyer to confirm that any pursuit of copyright permission is necessary. Initial consultations won't run you too much money.

If the story holds up on its own (ie: it makes sense and is entertaining completely apart from the Dune series), it may be worth adapting the universe to something more original before peddling it to the publishing industry.
*shrug*
Which book?
