While Googling to see if i could find the origin of the term "mediot", i found this horror. There are times when i wonder if the whole 'dangerously unbalanced Christian groups' thing is being exaggerated, that perhaps people like John Ashcroft and the loony judge from Alabama are isolated cases... i guess not.

It's really not. My standard recommendation for a good scary book on the subject is David Neiwert's In God's Country: The Patriot Movement and the Pacific Northwest.

There is a fucking flood of this crap out there.

Niewert has a blog (http://dneiwert.blogspot.com/). He's a smart guy but I get the impression that he's spent so much time with this stuff that the paranoia starts to rub off on him: he seems to think that there's an organized effort on the part of the Republican Party to accustom us to "eliminationist" rhetoric about liberals in preparation for mass bloodletting or one-party dictatorship. To be fair to him, he basically wants people to confront this stuff head-on rhetorically (which is a good idea in any event); he's not advocating stockpiling weapons in preparation for civil war.
