I am reading Generation X for the first time. I'm about halfway through it. It seems i am not actually a member of Generation X, as defined in the book. This is no big deal to me; if i had anything more in common with the characters of this book beyond species and gender, i might want to simply do the world a favor and shoot myself.

IDIOTS. They're IDIOTS. My GOD, Jim! They cope with the emptiness of their lives by surrounding themselves with emptiness, as if, through some sort of metaphysical alchemy, the physical vacuum will transmute into spiritual content. Jesus walked into the desert, after all! Except these utter YOYOS are no carpenter's son (they come from financially comfortable families) and the only Devil that might tempt them is their own ennui.

I read an excerpt from Microserfs in Wired way back when. I recall coming off severely irritated by the fluffy prose devoid of any content. No there there! This book is the same; i feel like a hummingbird that just fed at some IDIOT'S backyard who put aspartame instead of sugar in the feeder water.

The smugness factor is off the charts. To be fair, though, it wasn't so long ago that i was as smug as these poor bastards... hm, actually, it's been almost 14 years since i was that smug. Sophomore year of high school... christ, i'd barely started wanking. Maybe that's their problem, they're just sexually repressed...

Ah, bugger all this for a lark. I'll continue reading this tomorrow and i'll post more vituperative mini-reviews as i progress. I've already forgotten half the rants i had while reading on the train...
