Another thing i did yesterday before getting hurt was have lunch with [livejournal.com profile] allbery, where the conversation ran the gamut from Usenet to music to astrophysics.

Today i finally got my D&D 3.5 game going with The Boy, El Brendo, and surprise late addition Gor-Man ([livejournal.com profile] palecur was supposed to show up, but he begged out with some bullshit excuse, something about having promised to take his woman to the movies or something... what a sissy).  It went well, my improvisational skills were decent-to-good, and there was much laughter.

My foot hurts like a bitch, and i'm pretty sure it's more swollen now than before.

Holy Crap!

This reminds me of my dad's feet when he had water retention. What does the doctor say?

That bruising along the bottom of the toe line looks suspicious. Are you able to independently wiggle everything? X-rays might be a good idea.

But doesn't he have pretty feet?

If the swelling doesn't go down by Christmas, I vote let's decorate it!

Oh, yeah, everything moves fine. The swelling's a lot better today, which makes moving stuff easier.

What [livejournal.com profile] amywithanisaid, mostly. My first guess would be "fractured metatarsal". With things as swollen as that, the X-ray might not show very much, but you should get one, pronto.

I agree. I tried to get him to go to emergency yesterday, but he had a D&D game to run. More important, you know.

At this point, I don't know if it will hurt him any more to wait till Monday and see his regular doctor. Emergency rooms suck. And I don't blame him for preferring a D&D game over sitting there in a room full of dangerous germs.

I suppose it could be a hairline fracture, but the pain seems to be occuring at the base of the ankle, where the metatarsals start, and also in the arch, so i'm guessing it's all joint-related crap. Too many damn little bones down there.

Aiee!

I used to play in high school with [livejournal.com profile] palecur and a cousin. I started playing again thanks to The Boy soon after i started dating Kim. It's a nice way to kill an afternoon or evening.

You need to poke holes in those things before cooking them, or they may explode.

That's what happens when I get carried away in Photoshop and don't tweak things properly. They aren't that pronounced IRL.

Dude, gnarly foot!

> Michael Hedges - Sofa No. 1

Dude, cool tune. Are you more of a Zappa fan or a Hedges fan? Remind me to bring my guitar when next we meet.

Total Michael Hedges fan. His death hit me pretty hard, as far as the death of strangers do. I actually bought Zappa's "One Size Fits All" because that's where Sofa No. 1 is, and i like it, but i also listened to "Joe's Garage" and that was... less accessible.

Hedges

Cool. I actually saw Hedges do Sofa 1 back in 93 in Los Angeles - several years before he released it on Oracle. I remember trying to find a bootleg of it to no avail.

Daggone! Does that big mean bruiser of a left foot make your puny right foot's life a living hell, or what?

And what do you think of D&D 3.5? I reject it out of general kneejerk principles (I learned off the pink Basic box set) but don't really know anything about it.

3rd Edition and the d20 system greatly appealed to me as a geek, but 3e was a bit too complex at times. 3.5 streamlines things a lot — it's a great bugfix release, to put it in an even geekier fashion. There are some things it does that i'm not thrilled with (for example, it changed the gnome favored class, which doesn't affect me personally, but i consider it a change that could wreck a bunch of characters [not that any DM worth his salt wouldn't grandfather old characters or otherwise sidestep the issue with grace]).

So, yeah, i like 3.5. [livejournal.com profile] palecur and i started out with the red Basic set, then got the blue Expert set and green Companion set (also the black Master and gold Immortal set, but we never used those). 3.5's flexibility is very appealing, and the plausibility of things like movement and encumbrance work for me, too.

Hmmm, now I'm thinking maybe my Basic set was red too. I never got the expert set, as my friends (in the Boy Scouts) had drug me into AD&D by then.

Alas, I'm sout out of it I doubt I've ever played a non-Gygax D&D product.

PS, in solidarity with your left foot, my left pinky toe has gone and adopted the "swollen, pink and purple" look.
