  • Time's Joel Stein drinks 50 wines from 50 states and offers a quick review of each.  There are a few surprises, and a few hilariously scathing reviews.
  • I'd never heard of Davey Graham (although i'd guess that [livejournal.com profile] tronpublic and [livejournal.com profile] pdcawley had), but he was a seminal figure in English folk music in the `60s.  He was also one hell of a guitarist, doing stuff people wouldn't catch up to for another 10 years.  Ben Myers at the Guardian posted a retrospective out of YouTube clips.  Graham passed away on December 15.

I almost stabbed myself in the nose with my toothbrush when I read the review of the Arkansas chardonnay.

I was intrigued by the Michigan wine he reviewed (a riesling from Peninsula Cellars, about an hour's drive from us). I've tried a number of Michigan rieslings (since they seem to be the local strong point) and not been blown away, and was approaching the conclusion that either Michigan isn't really very good at wine, or that I just don't appreciate rieslings. It's probably true that I don't really appreciate rieslings, but I'll definitely seek this one out.

It made me want interns

Not the best response, I grant, but I want to have interns I can send out wine-buying. Or candy buying. Or even, you know, to each state in the union which ships bacon, so I can try something local.

I am bone lazy, in other words. Also thirsty, but not for anything made with muscadine.

The review of the "Nebraska Red" is basically spot-on. It's totally quaffable, but bland. JAV makes a pretty good Edelweiss, though, if semisweet white wines are your thing. And their mead is tasty.

Undulating Beat Chicks

Graham's bad Beat chick dancer was a great influence on Sun Ra's use of bad undulating dancers.
