The trial apparently had some fubar'd elements, and is vulnerable to appeal. What matters is knocking him out in the Senate race.
The Seattle Times had a great article by an Alaskan. There are so few people there that the job market is desparate and so there are unqualified people in jobs everywhere. Even the governorship, it turns out.
There was a pretty good story on NPR a couple weeks ago, basically saying that the longer the trial lasted, the harder it was for Stevens' re-election because his primary appearances in local news were through court updates. But also that the longer the trial lasted, the less likely he was to be prosecuted. There was no easy way for him to go through it unscathed.
If Stevens' sentencing date is November 3, I will be SO tickled.
Nice bring-back!
