[livejournal.com profile] palecur and i determined yesterday over lunch that the current financial crisis could have been avoided if only the people responsible had been brained with hardbound copies of [livejournal.com profile] skzbrust's Orca and Terry Pratchett's Going Postal.  Because it's all right there, because, oddly enough, this isn't the first time that this has happened.

With the difference that in real-life, the people responsible aren't dumped down a convenient pit. Thus proving fantasy is superior to real life.

Have you heard that This American Life/NPR News co-production (http://www.thislife.org/Radio_Episode.aspx?sched=1242) about the financial crisis? Where they basically interview people from every step in the chain, from Wall Street down to a guy with a home in foreclosure? It's amazing, because as you listen to bankers and mortgage brokers talk, you're thinking, "how could they possibly have believed this would work?" and the people they interview, at least, agree that in hindsight, they really should have known better.
