When I visited my sister in Germany for the first time, I was terribly disappointed in the Germans' respect for their own beers. We went to a Bierfest in the city she lived near (Kusel), where the local brewery made a very nice Altbier (called, creatively enough, Alt Kusel), among other styles. I think I saw maybe two other customers besides myself at their stand in the time I was there. What were the locals all drinking? The national brands like Bit and Jaeger Pils. Sure, they ain't Curs and Bud, but still.

Common people with common tastes are not merely an American phenomenon, you know.

Jared Diamond claims that most German beer is consumed within 30 miles of where it's brewed, but maybe the Germans haven't read "Guns, Keime, und Stahl" and therefore don't know that they have to drink only local beers.

This reminds me how remiss I am in enjoying Seattle's several German beer importing pubs, such as Die Bierstube and Prost!.
