Doesn't this seem amazingly backwards? I mean, fuck to mean copulation means copulation; if "fuck" to mean copulation is obscene, why isn't "copulation"?

Because "copulation" doesn't have that nice, percussive quality to it, like "shit", "fuck" and "cunt" do. Percussion + sexual or excretory meaning == BAD WORD.
