I stopped a shot with my mouth today.  Now my jaw won't close correctly (i can force it but it hurts).  What makes it worse is that Centavo was undefeated until tonight.  Ugh.  It was inevitable, though, as yesterday, Quakes finally won its first game of the session after four straight losses.

This is NOT what the coach meant by "Use your head".

Sorry, that anonymous comment was mine. Didn't notice I wasn't logged in.

This is not good. I hope you're planning to see a medical professional about this.

It's closing OK this morning, although there's definitely some soreness. I will monitor the situation closely. The test will be chewing on food, i think.

This one time? At band camp?

Well, in junior high orchestra rehearsal, anyhow. Some yahoo in the viola section (I forget whether it was my best friend or somebody else) asked about a pizzicato section and whether they were supposed to use their hands, meaning their m.d. as opposed to the fingers of their m.s. The director made a joking answer about other body parts, and I started to demonstrate with my nose and clonked my teeth against the bridge, dislocating my jaw. That's got to be the bizarrest thing I ever had to explain to a school nurse.

Rather than try to manipulate it back into joint, she had me sit there with the stinging cold of an ice pack on top of the already aching joint to contract the ligaments until it popped comfortably back into place. It did work within a few minutes, so I decided she wasn't really just trying to torture me. One oddly lasting memory from while I was sitting there in pain is discussion of a kid that walked by in the hall who had been out on suspension after setting another kid's pants on fire.

That sounds unpleasant.

You do realize that a mouthguard won't keep you from spraining your jaw, don't you?

Well, if nothing else, it'll help me not get a concussion.

I once had an injury like that. I got it under similar circumstances (stopping a water polo shot on goal). It was accompanied by a mild concussion. I would like to echo that it could be a good idea to seek medical attention. Good luck with that & I hope your jaw is back to working order soon!

Good luck -- I hope it turns out alright

I once stopped a concrete parking lot with my chin during a bicycle ride (splitting my chin open in the process). Insufficient healthcare coverage at the time (this was back in college), so I was only able to get the wound stitched back together. Even now the joints still won't align properly. I'm contemplating a checkup for TMJ disorder, but there's no actual pain -- just clicking. Get it checked out if you can.
