The DBA Manager has quit, due to the same cause as my boss's imminent departure. This is not surprising. However, in talking to him, it has become clear to me that pursuing my boss's job is an indisputable sign that i am absolutely fucking insane. And yet, the alternatives (the DCM manager, or else some new person who will, no doubt, have pointy hair) are less palatable.

I have to do this. If things go well enough for a year or so, i'll have grown in all the right ways. If not... well, things were probably going to shit anyway.

Feeling that one has to become one's manager in order to avoid a greater fuckwit being appointed to the post is never pleasant.

Today, three people on my flist have started applying for new jobs. I'm actively researching work as my PhD is starting to loom towards the dread writeup. (They're short over here; I'm hoping to finish well before I turn 26.)

My personal insanity: I'm actually *looking* for work with mediots in the radio industry. You may not be the craziest person here.

(Seriously: good luck.)

Go for it. If nothing else, toughing out that job for a year would make you a more impressive hire anywhere.

So quite bitching and do it. We all know you're skilled, know how to be decent and would make a great manager.

Don't make me fly out there just to slap you around.

:)

Maybe not the ideal circumstances in which to join the ranks of management, but good luck!

Yes, Yes! Fly out here and slap him around. I'll watch. Then we can go have sushi.

I'm flying out there anyway, so I'd be happy to slap him around for you.

I agree with [livejournal.com profile] boutell. Go for it and command yourself a slew of minions, then take [livejournal.com profile] 2wanda to the French Laundry for dinner with your phat new manager salary.

He might like it too much. But give him a few fresh ones.

If things go to shit, it won't be because of any lack of capacity or effort on your part. Nothing left to do but pre-emptively update your resume and hope for the best, sounds like.

Good luck.

I have to wait until my boss's departure is official. Can't exactly push him out the door if he hasn't left yet...

No food is good enough for me to wait two months. I'll take her to Terra (http://terrarestaurant.com/) instead.

Actually, it's three months. Which reminds me, I need to find out when [livejournal.com profile] tongodeon is coming back so I can time the reservation.

Terra looks good as well ...

Oh Yeah! Take her to Terra! That looks lovely. Isn't the French Laundry closed for extensive remodeling anyway?

And ... Go get that job. Begin positioning yourself. (STOP THAT - you know what I mean!)

You are doing it for a good (well, at least non-bad) reason. I'm sure you'll know within a few months if you're the right or wrong man for the job and act accordingly. I mean, worst case, there's always switching to Aleutian basket-weaving as a profession.

You were always good at keeping me on track at MM, helping me out in various projects when I couldn't get a stupid script to work properly, or lend a helping hand with various jobs when I slammed up against a wall. I think you would make an excellent manager, any PFY would be honored to be the BOFH's bitch :-)
