And who the fuck said it was OK for them to run for president?

On Monday afternoon, McCain made fun of Romney's evolving positions on other issues when asked about the immigration controversy during a conference call with bloggers.

"In the case of Gov. Romney, you know, maybe I should wait a couple of weeks and see if it changes, because it's changed in less than a year from his position before," McCain said.  "And maybe his solution will be to get out his small-varmint gun and drive those Guatemalans off his lawn. I don't know."

The jab squeezed in references to two past controversies: Romney's backtrack on an April comment that he'd "been a hunter pretty much all my life" -- he later said he had shot "varmints," such as rabbits, as a child; and a 2006 report in The Boston Globe that a landscaping firm Romney hired to maintain his home for years had hired illegal immigrants.

And you know what?  The Democrats could STILL fuck this up.

Okay so I buy the claim that the Romney gun flap is pertinent because it speaks to the question of whether it is possible to determine what his likely policies would be once he became President (despite the fact that everybody knows that business as usual during a Presidential campaign is extreme-early-moderate-late, and wouldn't we rather he pandered to the gun lobby rather than really being one of them, etc.) but I don't understand why the landscaping thing matters.

It's virtually impossible to get certain kinds of work done in Santa Fe without running the risk of hiring a company that pays its workers in cash; I would have to assume that the same is true in Boston. And if he's to blame for hiring someone that hires illegal workers, how far does his culpability go? Should he be held responsible if he shops at Wal-Mart?

I haven't been paying much attention to the whole Romney thing; I believe he's unelectable because he's a Mormon, and not just a rank-and-file Mormon, but a former bishop, and so not subject to the usual pass given to the nominally religious. But I took it as a sign that it's, er, open season on Romney when he appeared on the cover of Time or Newseek or whatever a couple of weeks ago.

Honestly. Is this really the best way to choose the leader of the free world?

It sure is. I used to ride past the day-job queues in the back bay on early mornings. And that was almost twenty years ago.
