I have a new passport.

Thursday evening, Centavo defeated Jets 10-7.  I had a very good game in goal, winning a fair amount of one-on-ones and having some nice saves.

Last night, [livejournal.com profile] 2wanda and i went with most of my company to the Diamond Suite at Giants Stadium (i refuse to acknowledge the corporate moniker) to watch the Giants thump the Dodgers.  Baseball at the stadium is vastly better than baseball on TV, and baseball in a suite (with free food and booze) directly behind home plate beats baseball anywhere else in the stadium.  There were many good defensive plays and Jason Schmidt, after an iffy first inning, settled down to have a very good outing.

Tonight, Kim and i went to [livejournal.com profile] missionista's and [livejournal.com profile] dr_memory's housewarming party.  We had the fortune of being the first ones there, and thus were able to monopolize our hosts' time (and i also took the opportunity to install myself as wine tsar).  I was thoroughly amused by [livejournal.com profile] mangosteen's attempt to place my accent somewhere in the British Isles.  Besides him, i also met [livejournal.com profile] ladycalliope, and, well, probably a bunch of other LiveJournal-enabled people but whose usernames i neglected to inquire about.  A very fun time was had.

I really wanted to go see a Red Sox game while I was in Boston, but managed to choose a week where they were away for the entirety of the week to go. :-(

Yeah, when we went to Chicago a couple of years ago (http://ronebofh.livejournal.com/212787.html), i wanted to catch a game at Wrigley Field, but the Cubs were in Milwaukee at the time. I have seen the Dodgers, Mets, Giants, Athletics, Marlins and Mariners play at home, so that ain't too shabby.

Corporate Naming Rights

The Giants' stadium is the one modern ballpark where I don't have a qualm with them selling corporate naming rights, because they built the ballpark with their own money, rather than feeding at the public trough. Not that McGowan didn't try to get public financing first, but compare that to the other cities that levied a tax or a bond for the building of the ballpark.

Of course, now that we're in what, our third iteration already, it's a little silly, but conceptually I have less of a problem with it.

You've got a good point there. And it's not as stupid as "Monster Park".

To avoid confusion, you could always refer to it as Corporate Sponsor Park. That way, you don't have to remember the latest sponsor. I never do!

And on another topic - nice tunes, dude!

Accent - British Isles? :snort:

In his defense, i'd been drinking (which always makes my accent more evident) and i insisted he make a guess.

Ahhhhhhh...the Giants may have thumped the Dodgers a couple of times, but LA is still going to win the division, beat whoever shows up from the East and take the NL Pennant.

Ah, i see you are not claiming they'll beat the AL champ, so you're not completely insane.

I do think the Dodgers are the favorites to take the NL West. I don't think they'll beat the Mets in the playoffs, although they have a better chance if the rumors about Glavine are true.

Oh, I've got the Dodgers in 5 over the Mets for the NL Pennant. And if they somehow meet the Angels in the World Series, the Dodgers win in 6.

Mine at least is a dream which could come true...of course, given my luck when picking teams to win championships, it could end up being the Diamondbacks facing the Rangers in the World Series.

I don't think MLB rules allow the Rangers to reach the World Series.

It just blows me away how flawed all the top NL teams are this year. The Mets are clearly the class of the NL, but with Pedro on the DL (again) and Glavine at the very least at risk to be out, who do the Mets roll out for a best of five series? Steve Trachsel? El Duque? Bruce Berenyi?

You can do this exercise with all of the top NL teams - I really think there might be six, maybe even seven AL teams that are better than the best NL team. I know that anything can happen in a short series, but I have to imagine that you could get some pretty long odds on any NL team winning the World Series.

It's been a weird season... for a while, so many teams were within shooting distance of the playoffs, then came August and a lot of teams fell behind.

It was good meeting you (and placing your accent incorrectly as well... I still think the football team method is more accurate than guessing though).

See, i could have taken you literally and said, "FĂștbol? Why, Liga Deportiva Universitaria de Quito, of course!" And then you would have had the right piece of the puzzle.

It was good to meet you and [livejournal.com profile] lottelita as well.

... hey, wait a minute. You know my brother [livejournal.com profile] palecur! Have you been to a party at his place, maybe?

Oh, [livejournal.com profile] palecur and I go back a couple years, hanging out at all sorts of conventions and parties, particularly when I'm in Concord. Small world, isn't it?

I also must point out that the results of the second two games of the Dodgers stand up in S.F. where very different than the first.
