You know, there was this dumb gorefest film in a claustrophic setting that counted Samuel L. Jackson among its stars and scary animals as the nemesis.  It was called "Deep Blue Sea".  It sucked and it did poorly.  Now we have "Pacific Air 121", with all the same core qualities, except this time it's been hyped to death, given a stupid yet catchy title, and somehow you people think it's the greatest thing since sliced bread.  It isn't.  It's still a stupid movie.  The whole "so dumb it's fun" thing has been done to death by pro wrestling, Norm McDonald, and the Bush Administration.  So if that's what you like, sure, go watch the movie.  But let's not pretend that somehow this dumb movie is better than other dumb movies.  I didn't see you people lining up to go watch "Dungeons & Dragons", after all.

Oh, come on— you have to admit it was fun to watch Jeremy Irons bounce around in there. It didn't make up for crap acting of the protagonists and the nine million other things that went horribly wrong, but Jeremy Irons was clearly going on more than mere stoicism.

The problem with Deep Blue Sea is that it seemed to take itself seriously.

Snakes on a Plane doesn't take itself seriously at all from all impressions. It is a Hong Kong movie made in the US. Not all bad movies are created equal.

And it has Samuel L. Jackson, one of the best scenery chewers in the business. He makes movies like Formula 51 fun.

Indeed -- my initial comment on walking out of the theater was "this is the STUPIDEST thing I have ever seen that wasn't made in Hong Kong." And I say this as someone with a deep and abiding love for intensely stupid HK flicks.

DBS was entertaining enough, in a big dumb action flick movie sort of way. But it didn't seem to realize it was nothing but a big dumb action movie, while SOAP positively revels in its campy over-the-top dumbness.

(And it had the best gratuitous yap-dog scene I've seen since "Blade 3", which was also pretty damn stupid.)

But let's not pretend that somehow this dumb movie is better than other dumb movies.

...because there's no pretense! This really is one of the best really dumb movies ever made! And, unlike the Bush administration, it's thankfully all over in two hours!

So if that's what you like, sure, go watch the movie.

And that's exactly what I did! And if that's not what you like, don't go watch the movie! ...but don't harsh my mellow, homeslice!

Ah, but you see, you don't actually have to watch it, unlike all those times that the Bush (and previously, Clinton) administration smashed down your door, strapped you to a seat and held your eyeballs open to make you watch Deep Blue Sea.

But seriously, I don't think it's about the movie so much as it's about the hype and interaction. I doubt I heard more than one word in two last night over the ribaldry. What made it so much fun was that the movie didn't take itself seriously (*cough* Deep Blue Sea) and the crowd was active and making it fun.

Plus it's the best motherfucking dumb movie ever.

I understand that it's cool to buck against the hype, but this movie *is* its hype. The movie was designed for the audience to shout back. It's a raucous, fun movie.

It's not fun because it's so bad that it's good. It's not fun because it's the first time anyone made a disaster movie on a plane.

It's fun because Samuel L. Jackson is awesome, because the funny parts are intentionally funny, and because the audience is shouting "Snakes on a Plane!"

That said, now that it's over, I'd like for the hype to disappear now, thankyouverymuch.

I had fun in the movie. The audience was going nuts and everyone was entertaining and entertained. I feel sorry for folks like you, man, because you can't have fun with people.

The guy behind me drank 2 bottles of merlot, too. Even wine aficionados like Snakes on a Plane. If you weren't such a curmudgeon you could have chatted with him during the movie about merlot and stuff.

Disclaimer: I am also a curmudgeon.

I had a really fun time at my birthday party last night. On one side of me sat a boyfriend, and on the other side of me sat a Green Party guy who I played "spot the product placement" with. I also had a martini, a gin and tonic, and a rattlesnake/snakebite/something-or-other on board, and the audience was enthusiastic.

My snake-shaped birthday cake was great in concept, but disappointing in execution, though. (Part of the head slipped off, seeming to jump out of the fridge onto my hand, before it fell to the floor.)
