- CJ Cherryh's The Faded Sun: picked this up at my brother's behest, in addition to many raves. 8 chapters into "Kesrith", i abandoned it out of boredom.

- Deftones' Around The Fur: picked this up because i dig "Be Quiet And Drive (Far Away)". The rest of the disc consists of Chino either groaning or screeching over guitar that's as lively as a cowpie. Conclusion: they shot their wad on their single.

For an author who can be so outstanding, Cherryh sure can suck. Faded Sun almost made me resolve to read no more of her earlier work, and then I discovered 'Serpent's Reach,' which is a real gem. I have no explanation for her inconsistent quality, but it's a problem that persists in the new stuff as well.
