For an author who can be so outstanding, Cherryh sure can suck. Faded Sun almost made me resolve to read no more of her earlier work, and then I discovered 'Serpent's Reach,' which is a real gem. I have no explanation for her inconsistent quality, but it's a problem that persists in the new stuff as well.
