This time it didn't panic, it just froze.  I can't take this anymore; i'm going to have to go to Fry's and get the special-of-the-week and build a new system.  And i can't do it on Xmas, and i can't do it the day after Xmas because i'll be packing for my trip to Vegas, so it'll have to sit until i get back, but it'll no doubt freeze or crash while i'm gone, so i HAVE to do it tomorrow and Monday.

Have you tried running a memory stress test on it?

I'm convinced. We all need to return to Morse code with string and two tin cans. Computers! Bah!

I bet if boredom wasn't doing Usenet you'd just host everything on colo boxes. So I blame Usenet for your problems, though I can't claim that all the text groups you host are the culprit for your woes, since as we all know Usenet Is Dead[tm]. Maybe it's time to just let go.

I'd also urge you not to get a special of the week. Go for a server-class machine, so at some point you can pick it up and drop it in colo. You should be able to get a PIII-class 1u or 2u for dirt cheap.

Oh, and will you be playing the tables in Vegas? didn't know you were into JOPKE (besides following paulp's blog)

Don't make me beat you.

I'm not getting a special of the week, i'm using an old Dell that Xney gave me. I'm not dropping money on a rackmountable machine because i don't have any intention of paying a colo to host my stuff. I'm cheap.

I won't be gambling this time around because i'm broke. Normally i'll drop $100 on blackjack — no poker, too annoying.

I like Dells, their servers are especially stable.

I'd argue that your definition of "cheap" doesn't include your time, but I'm a pussy that way.

Heh, I hear you, too many balding sunglassed fantasy league duffers to your taste. What will you be doing when you're over there anyway? When Nat and I went there in '98 (it was a reward for doing the MV old->new colo project) we ended up walking our feet off going from one end of the Strip to the other...we had to hitch a bus back because we simply were too tired to walk.

Always the way - if it's any consolation, I had my co-lo machine run out of disk (I knew it was possible, because I'd been redlining it for a while, but still) while I was in the middle of a field with no access to a computer for a week... Hope it's better now, though... Enjoy Vegas.
