I think i put my finger on why big flamers on TV (like Carson Fartknocker on "Queer Eye", Jack on "Will & Grace", and the bald guy on "Sex and the City") piss me off; they're homosexual minstrel shows.  They just shuck and jive because that's what the straights want to see them do.  I sure hope pop culture outgrows it soon.

Yup. I remember a discussion about this a while back, where several of my friends were wondering if "Look! Mainstream television accepts teh Gay!" was really a *good* thing if it was still just endless stereotyping of an offensive nature.

"Hi, I'll be your lisping, mincing, bitchy queer for the evening!"
*sigh*

On both the shows you mention, they're not the only queer folk. Carson is one of the fab five, all of whom are gay; Will (the title character, for gosh's sake) is a little stereotyped, but not that much.

If your bitchy queen ratio is between 50% and 20%, I think that's improvements over 100% flaming or no visible prescence.

At the same time, it's the super-exaggerated stereotype characters that John and Jane Doe marvel at the humor of around the dinner table.

I think what you are referring to here is 'kamping' - what was once denounced in polite society as "foppery" when it was engaged in by 'straights' who were not at all interested in public displays of useless machismo.

Think about how stressed out 'main street' america is right now, as I noted in my rant below. They are four years into their guilt about the 'whatever on whomever' and the reality that they are still in the rear with the beer. Mainstream america needs all the help they can get to cope with their totally unresolved sexuality issues. So if they can start with the humour around the dinner table. Who knows, they may actuallly be able to work out what it is that they want to do with their lives in the long term.

Why they might even get past the failed maxim:
War Makes Men Of Boys
and gosh, they might be able to work out the differences between force and violence. Why who knows, they might be able to back away from their machismo issues and find a safe place to kamp in their own right....

It COULD HAPPEN.

Progress?

What I really want to see is when it is OK to have:
I will be your lisping, mincing, bitch straight boy who sooo just does not care about these stoopid gender role fascists and their stuck up poseur posturing about why only faggots should be allowed to step outside of all of that excessively butch macho wankage...
Since there was this comical moment for some poor hetboys when they wandered up to the HardBoys and were being all 'guyish' - and then invited the HardBoys to beat up some nancyBoys who were kamping down the lane.... Only to have the HardBoys point out that they were not going to go gay bashing, because they were gay.

Which of course paniced the hetBoys, as they were so not sure what to do with a bunch of gay guys who pump iron and are such RealMen[dm] who just happened not to be hetBoys....

Don't watch any HK films with gay men any time soon, champ...

Well...non-"ART" films, that is.

They still piss me off.

That having been said, I don't mind the occasional mincing queen because...well, I know a lot of them. To me, the others on QE balance out Carson.

I noticed on QE that all the fab five have a twin counterpart within the five -- except Carson.

Carson's not so bad, but Jack on Will and Grace, and his hag the spoiled rich woman, are both insufferable.

Never really seen Sex and the City.

Why Not The Next Queer Eye Show?

As I keep whining about this, and forgive me, I have been whining about it since the late seventies, there is a need for the OTHER Queer Eye for straight guy show. The one where we have the Gay Lawyer, the Gay Investment Advisor, the Gay Broker, and the Gay Lawyer who come to the rescue of het folks who have not taken the time to sort out all of their legal and fiscal issues, having foolishly presumed that merely getting a 'marriage license' was worth more than they actually paid for it. Which is clearly less now that the so called 'marriage tax' has been removed, and everyone has woken up to the reality of the "post terri schiavo economic realism" where one's assets are at risk based upon anyone who might be associated with one's SO.

You know a show by Log Cabin Republicans for mainstream america.

But that way of course takes us back to the sort of Gay Folks who were anti-ActUp because they really fealt that it was no one's business what they did in the privacy of their own lives. A topic of angst that will take some a while to work out which side they want to be on.

Then there is this whole cultural crisis that you are missing out on. Why is it, that in the middle of the current "whatever on whomever" there are still all of these victims of chickenhawk angst who are so not sure how to cope with their alledged 'heterosexuality' having spent the last four years cowering behind the skirts of girls like Lynde England. Do you really want to worry them more by requiring the evil liberal media to have their sterotypes on display for the rest of the country to pick on? Hum???? Do you really want to tramatize the victims of chickehhawk angst more than they are suffering today????

Where IS your compassion.

Besides - what is wrong with a bit of excessive over the top kamping? I mean it beats the tar feathers out of that junk where one has to take a tent, sleeping bags, and there is absolutely no room service out there amongst the trees. I mean what's with that?

Why just the other day I was having so much fun in the IKEA playing around, and, well, gosh I scared a few of the liberally concerned straight folks.... seems that they have this presumption that if one is Kamping one is 'acting out' - rather than that one is pleasantly enjoying the company for friends and giggling at the folly of having to work out what fits into a decorum that one hasn't really resolved. Albeit one has no intention to do battle ship grey, or any of the basic OD colours....

So get OVER your ISSUES!!!

Flame ON!

I mean, what is the worst that happens? They cut your hair, they put you on the beach with the swedish girls volley ball team!
