Brian Cashman accepts a 3-year contract extension from the Yankees.  In other news, he's also signed an endorsement deal with Merriam-Webster to have his picture appear under the dictionary entry for "masochist".

You crazy Americans get all the fun. None of my dictionaries have any pictures at all.

Interesting that A-Rod has picked up on the "this was Brian and Joe's best season" comment. The logic being that the Yanks were left for dead at one point and rallied to win the division despite that.

Frankly, I think it was a terrible season for Cashman. He failed to address the one glaring need on the team, at center field. He priced himself out of the Beltran sweepstakes by signing Jaret Wright and Carl Pavano - how did those signings work out? Both had injuries, but let's face it - neither was unforeseeable, given their past. If it weren't for Giambi resurrecting his career and the contributions by Wang, Aaron Small and Shawn Chacon, they'd have been left holding the bag despite having the capability in the offseason to address their glaring needs. Of the three pitchers, really only Chacon was any sort of brilliant insight that he might be helpful - Wang was already in the system, and Small was a desperation call.

I'm not saying that Cashman didn't deserve the contract; on the contrary, it's hard to know how much autonomy he really has. This most certainly wasn't his best season, however.

I think that signing him up for more is a bad choice from both sides, because Steinbrenner's Tampa cronies haven't learned to keep their hands out of the cookie jar, and therefore why should Cashman want to subject himself to three more years of the same stuff? I mean, the guy looked positively haunted during last season's ALCS. You could see his hairline receding. I agree that this season was far from Cashman's finest, but probably not wholly through his own (in)actions. And that's why he should've turned it down and gone somewhere else.

I don't think it's interesting that A-Rod has picked up on that. He's such an image-conscious weenie, i'd be more surprised if he hadn't.
