Remember the hoohah about Laura telling George to pick a woman for the Supreme Court?  cjrcampaigndesk talks it down:

Bah. If they'd rediscovered their calling, they'd be asking "what did he do?", not "is the President going to fire him?".

Meanwhile, the buzz on the streets of Mount Rozell, Alabama, is that the 2008 Presidential contest will be Laura v. Hillary and will feature a cage match.

Rove's version of the story is that he had no idea Plame was undercover, because she drives to Langley alla time yadda yadda yadda. This is going to turn out to be no more prosecutable than Sandy Berger walking out of the National Archives with secret documents stuffed in his drawers, unless somebody can come up with proof that Rove wasn't just repeating K-street espresso-line gossip.

Wikipedia says: "On April 1, 2005, in connection with the documents investigation, Berger pled guilty to a misdemeanor charge of unauthorized removal and retention of classified material. Under a plea agreement, he was fined $10,000 and lost his security clearance for three years."

Sounds pretty damn prosecutable to me.

yeah, I knew I was on shaky ground there.

The NYT is reporting today, though, that Rove merely confirmed what Novak told him, Novak having either made it up himself or heard it from someone else.

Look, I don't like any of these guys. I even cheered when I heard they'd sent Judy Miller to jail. But I'll bet she's the only one who goes to jail over this whole thing. Nobody has anything on Rove that will stand up, and nobody is going to get it by standing in the East Wing making a show of asking Li'l' Scotty tough questions.

Just the shift from a docile, tame press to a bunch of capering, nosy journalists should be enough to make them nervous. I doubt Rove'll go to jail, but i can see him getting fined, like Berger.
