"Please act towards others with goodwill and with courtesy;
Otherwise, be polite."

                - Guitar Craft House Rules

The older i get, the easier it is for me to remember to follow this.  It is important; it is urgent.  I sneer and use sarcasm because i've done it so often that it becomes rote, a reflex, an automatic defense against a world and a humanity that, frankly, too often pisses me off and disappoints me.  But i do not blame the world and the people around me for my behavior.

I blame you for my behavior.

You left out some of the other Guitar Craft house rules:

1. Chairs shall be 46.5cm high. Additionally, there shall be a 20cm high x 3cm diameter pole protruding up from the center of the chair to help you keep your posture.

2. You shall use an arbitrary guitar tuning that Fripp has proclaimed to be "the new standard".

3. You shall not display any emotion while playing - no matter how much of a bad ass mofo you are on guitar. You should make Spock look like Robing Williams.

4. No major triads.

OK, mister funny man, come up with a good punchline to, "How many Crafties does it take to change a light bulb?"

Eight.

Three to handle odd-numbered rotations of the lightbulb, three to handle even-numbered rotations, and two to play the low C#'s that are all buzzy because standard-scale guitars weren't designed to be used with such low string tension.

Okay, so that punchline kinds of collapsed halfway through.

It's funny because it's TRUE.

Some of the guys in my guitar circle had a tiny doohickey that adjusted the first fret of the low C string so it wouldn't buzz.

In fact, I will punish reward you for it by forcing you to giving you the opportunity to listen to my just-recorded Crafty Guitarist pastiche (in the sense of "homage"): http://nothings.org/music/sketchbook2/sketch210.mp3 (2.5MB)

  • not actually using New Standard tuning
  • the lowest string isn't the only one that buzzes
  • not using Ovation acoustic guitars
  • not actually acoustic guitars at all
  • part of my "music sketchbook" project, so recorded quickly and rather sloppily

Three: one to tune the filament in the new bulb; one to actually fit the bulb; and one to play slide guitar using the blown bulb.

Ha ha ha. Tune the filament! That's pretty funny! I like the part about playing slide with the blown bulb. Heh!

Umm, I dunno Mister Fudd, how many Crafties does it take to change a light bulb?

Alternatively: none, that's a job for a roadie!

oh, come on. Fripp's a lot cooler than his sister (http://www.fripp.com/).

Admittedly, however, a guitarist who can only tune his guitar one way is not much of a guitarist.

Michael Hedges rules!

"grimace" is an emotion, right?

If Fripp didn't want major triads in "New Standard Tuning", he shouldn't have made the root-5th-10th voicing so easy to play!

Not like he invented it or nuthin' -- it's just standard cello tuning applied to the guitar.

Be well-dressed
