I left the theater with a grin on my face... that rarely happens.  It was a movie constructed with predictable tropes in an unpredictable fashion.  It was the sort of mental noodling in which i regularly engage.  It was fun, it was gross, it was not especially deep but it didn't need to be.  It's a movie about nothing and about everything, about you and about everyone else but you, about bad poetry and Shania Twain.

If there were such a thing as the Susan Sarandon-Julianne Moore spectrum, and it were described by a parabola with its apex in France, you would find Isabelle Huppert there.  Lily Tomlin's costuming was marvelous.  The movie doesn't take itself too seriously, so if you go see it, neither should you.

When you see this, post a bit of poetry in your own journal.

pity this busy monster,manunkind,

not.  Progress is a comfortable disease:
your victum(death and life safely beyond)

plays with the bigness of his littleness
-electrons deify one razorblade
into a mountainrange;lenses extend

unwish through curving wherewhen until unwish
returns on its unself.
                                  A world of made
is not a world of born-pity poor flesh

and trees, poor stars and stones, but never this
fine specimen of hypermagical

ultraomnipotence.  We doctors know

a hopeless case if-listen:there's a hell
of a good universe next door;let's go

- e. e. cummings

Liechtenstein managed to tie Portugal 2-2 at Vaduz in a World Cup qualifier match on Oct 9.  Even though it's noted chokers Portugal, it's still a stunning result.  Couple that with Andorra's first ever victory in qualifiers versus Macedonia, and it's been a good week for minnows.

In the CONMEBOL zone, Ecuador is tied for fourth place, amidst a clump of 8 countries who have between 16 and 10 points; put simply, nobody's out of it (the top four teams qualify and #5 plays a home-and-away with the Oceania leader) and there's still 8 games to go.  So, even after their Copa América debacle, Ecuador has as good a chance as any country, besides Brazil and Argentina, to go to Germany `06.  Go Ecuador!

Via [livejournal.com profile] modrnwrld_blog, Josh Marshall writes:

This week RNC Chairman Ed Gillespie sent [Rock The Vote] a 'cease and desist' letter threatening legal action against the group and raising the possibility of seeking the revocation of the group's status as a tax-exempt 501c3 organization if the group did not cease discussing the draft issue.

Claims that a draft is possible, Gillespie argued, are so ridiculous on their face that the the group could only be acting from 'malicious intent and a reckless disregard for the truth.'
This isn't some dinky state GOP outfit, like the one in New Mexico that wanted loyalty oaths.  This is the freakin' national chairman.

"... thousands of people every year, from all over the world, find healing relief from a variety of ailments - from cataracts and emphysema to arthritis and migraine headaches - at Montana's most unusual health facilities, the radon health mines of Boulder and Basin."

[Kerry] soon returned to the attack, calling the shortage of flu vaccine another example of how the Bush administration deals with problems facing the nation.

"This story is a demonstration of this administration, how they deal with everything," Kerry said. "Because of the failure of judgment, failure to act, we have a shortfall of 48 million flu shots."
Of all the freaking things this administration has done wrong... Kerry is sticking to the flu shots.  Because he really needs the old fart vote!  Terrorists might not get them for a while, but they might DIE this flu season thanks to the Bush Administration's failure to manufacture enough flu shots in their SEKRIT LABS!!1

Actually, now we know what that bulge on Bush's back is: that's where he's keeping all the flu shots!
