I made it into today's TMQ, near the end.

(I was surprised that he failed to take the Raiders to task for their preposterous punt on 4th and 4 with 4:08 to go in the game; the score was tied, the Raiders were 4-7 and playing at home, so instead of trying to make the first down, or kicking a long field goal with their Popeye-legged kicker, they punt and effectively tell the Chiefs, "Hey, no hurry, we'll wait for you to give us the ball back and try to win it then."  The Chiefs scored the winning touchdown on the next drive on a 70-yard catch.  Thanks, Norv!  You sickening, craven lout.)

Are you familiar with "It's Fourth Down and What Does the Bellman Equation Say?" It's basically an economist (David Romer) telling football coaches that they should "go for it" more often on 4th downs if they want to maximize their teams' chances of winning.

Finally gave this a read... what wasn't brutally over my head mathwise was pretty interesting. Thanks.

TMQ is one of my favourite columns, and to my shame I'd totally failed to notice your name in it. I am the suck.

Would be if I was English, of course, which I'm not (at least not entirely). The town where I grew up had a pro team for most of the late nineties...

I was born and brought up in Edinburgh. My dad's a Scot, and I describe myself as Scottish, but my mother's English and I have a mostly English accent.

Anglo-Scot is probably most accurate, really.
