I was struck by the idea today that the UNIX epoch would have been better set, in a purely romantic sense, on July 21, 1969, rather than the pedestrian January 1, 1970.

Vernor Vinge played on that in A Deepness In The Sky. The protagonist is a former programmer for an interstellar trading fleet whose computers run on something like a thousand years of legacy code. The whole civilization uses a time system usually said to date from the first human landing on the Moon, but he hears somewhere that it's really not that, but a moment a few tens of megaseconds later that was the time origin for some old Earth operating system.
