[livejournal.com profile] acronym reminded me about Audioscrobbler, a plug-in that tabulates the mp3s you listen to and gives you recommendations. The site is well-done; check it out.

Dear mister mp3 expert,

How come m3u playlists served via HTTP make Windows Media Player unstable and fail to show song titles even during individual song playback in both Zinf and Winamp? I have a cheesy workaround that lets me figure out what the hell I'm listening to, but it's not ideal. Grumble.

I wish i knew. It's one of the reasons i went with iTunes; even though it's a ravenous beast, it understands HTTP-streamed ID3 tags and it keeps track of what you've played even after you quit the program, which Winamp failed to do for me.

I've never heard of Zinf, so i can't help you there. I recommend switching to iTunes.

Clever! I dunno if I like the bit about assuming that every song you listen to is a song you like. I guess it makes sense for most people, but at work we have a big fileshare reserved for MP3s, and I just point my player at that and tell it to give me something random.

Wow, a big MP3 fileshare. I'm guessing Legal knows nothing about this.

Is it going to make my computer very unhappy?

Not any unhappier than your regular mp3 player software.

I run Winamp + Lplayer, and Lplayer tries its best. I probably need to clean off my hard drive and defrag... which would require me watching all those TV shows I downloaded.

Better would be a new box, but I don't see that happening any time soon, sadly.
