Try aptitude, and/or stick 'em all on one line?

aptitude didn't do much except install some shared mime info package.

My comment below notwithstanding, Das Weasel Kaiser has the right of it.

Me too. I'm not a programmer, but for a while, I thought I should be. And years ago, I thought, "I guess I should try to learn Java, because that's going to be a Big Thing and it would be a useful skillset." But the damn thing would never install right, so I couldn't even practice, so I gave up.

But, of course, there's still been tons of Java apps written by other people. NONE of which work as advertised. And it wasn't just me; at one internet company I worked for, they had this dumb Java email management program called "Egain" that they forced us to use for a while, and neither the IT department *nor the Egain people* could get the damned thing to work properly. We went back to using Kana.

Even today, every couple weeks I get a pop-up telling me I need to update Java. It's been nagging me for a year now, but every time I click the "go ahead and update, see if I care" button, it wastes a bunch of time downloading crap and then says "install failed".

Fucking Java.

Java seems to have found niches as one of many languages for back-end server code, and as the main language for apps and some system programming on Android. On the personal-computer desktop, it's always had the problem that it requires this runtime from Sun/Oracle that is nontrivial to deal with, and it was never able to be as seamlessly cross-platform as its creators intended.

I ended up upgrading the box from 10.04 to 12.04, which has OpenJDK 7 standard.

Since when won't apt install dependencies?

That's exactly my reaction. I suspect that the repository is buggered, but all i can find is an extant bug describing this very problem that was submitted in September 2011 and has not been updated since.

You would think there would be a "--install-now-mofo" option.

Huh. That does seem like a repo issue - ie, once A required B, now B requires A, and your repo is out of sync on one and not the other.

If you can get hold of the .deb, you should be able to do "dpkg -i --force-all" to get it actually installed. But, annoying hassle.

Tried that; didn't work. [livejournal.com profile] allbery determined that the packages were, indeed, built by a cretin.

These packages were built by someone who doesn't know what they're doing.
They conflict with the packages they depend on. Someone didn't realize
that 7~b117 < 7b89.
