Tangy just slaughtered BRECIS 16-3 in a game that wasn't as close as the score shows. I managed to forget my gloves (Bernie brought an extra pair, fortunately), then i managed to save a shot with my left ring fingertip (i won't be able to take my ring off for a few days), and i finished the game with rug burn on my left knee. After so many decent games, today i was left hung out to dry often, and our defense gave up a lot of shots; everybody looked tired. The game started at 17:55, so Kim said that maybe everyone was playing without having had dinner, and i think she's probably right. We had a lot of subs, and we replaced people often, and i wonder if that contributed to some confusion among the team, as well.

I wasn't terribly happy with my play, but that was born out of frustration (not unlike the bruised knuckle i got after punching the wall)... when my defense starts leaving me alone, i start playing as a defender, because i feel i'm out of choices. I am not going to be a sitting duck. I kept running to kick the ball and missing, and i got beat a lot on my near side, and i need to figure out why.

I strongly suspect that the first part of this will count as teaching granny how to suck eggs: if you're coming out to meet an opposing forward, always always ALWAYS cover your near post. Apart from anything else, it means the opponenet can only shoot one way, so you only have to guess when the shot will come, not where it will go.

Perhaps more pertinent: if your defence was dropping you in it, were you starting from positions which were further than usual from your goal line? That kind of thing can really screw up your mental image of the 'correct' angle at which to meet the attacker. Sneaky and cynical goalies often make marks (strictly illegal but not well policed) or note landmarks (legal but less effective) to help them keep track of their position w.r.t. the goal...

I suspect it's more of the latter... i normally do protect my near post, but i think i wasn't sure where i was starting from when i came out.

I also gave up the first goal on a soft shot that just rolled in next to the post. Early tricky shots give me fits because i'm not mentally warmed up for them yet.
