I always thought Michael Savage was self-trolling - anybody who takes him seriously by definition removes himself from the dialogue. Or, in other words, the inadvertent self-parody is as extreme as potential deliberate parody.

Savage has a certain amount of vaudeville showman about him, as do most blatant political demagogues. Like Coulter, his act has zero subtlety. He never breaks character, so to speak, because that would let the rubes who take him seriously in on the joke; in point of fact, he and those like him (O'Reilly) react viciously whenever their utter sincerity is questioned.

I don't doubt that Savage and those of his ilk actually believe a certain percentage what they spew out, but a degree of exaggeration is necessary when chasing higher ratings and competing against the 3,471 other conservative-talk-radio pundits for market share.
