5726

For the un-nerdly among you: that means that, so far today, my mail server has bounced 5726 messages intended for unknown recipients.

Also: EarthLink is selling spam (via Lee Ann Goldstein in the Other Place).

Spammers or child molesters: who are worse?

This is one of those trick questions, right? Like, which would you rather lose, your eye or your ear? They both go to the 10th Circle of Hell.

On the other hand, I give you digitalwork.com's defense of their system:
http://www.earthlink.digitalwork.com/directe_learn.html#faq1

In other words, it's an opt-in system, so it's your own lookout if you start getting mail you don't want. Almost assuredly, the check-box to opt-in will already be pre-checked for you when you sign up with Earthlink....

At least child molesters end up in jail.

Actually it came from Elias in some other place, Lee Ann just reposted it. :-)

The unknown user bit is interesting, but more and more spammers are trying username scans. If this is work, I'm not quite as surprised, if it's your home machine, then that's quite large. You might find that those things are bounces, too, with your domain spoofed. I see many of those @colondot.net. They're often quite plausible local-parts, too.

This is home. At work, we probably get 5000 bounces an hour, at least.
