Let's take Rob Gordon's Top 5 First Songs on the First Side of an Album, in no particular order, among the music i own:

• "The Act We Act", off Sugar's Copper Blue. The growling guitar immediately engages your attention, and when the drums come in, the song envelops you.
• "The Grudge", off Tool's Lateralus. Like Opiate and Undertow, the first track starts off with a few seconds of background noise, which lulls the listener into letting his aural guard down. I've already extolled this song. There's not much more i could add to it now.
• "Debaser", off the Pixies' Doolittle. Charles Thompson watches Buñuel, goes a little crazy. Hey, i hear it's not that uncommon.
• "One Of These Days", off Pink Floyd's Meddle. Mood, mood, mood. The sensation that someone or something is coming up behind you. A threat is made; a chase ensues.
• "Buried In Your Black Heart", off the Burden Brothers' Buried In Your Black Heart. An irresistible, all-out romp in 5/4 about irresistibility.

If i had to rank them, from 5 to 1: "Heart", "Debaser", "Days", "Grudge", "Act".
