I went back to play soccer last week, as i'd been jonesing to play and i felt my right thumb was well enough to handle it.  Last Wednesday i was pretty rusty, but i was pretty good on Thursday.  Today i was pretty good until one of my opponents kicked my left thumb out of joint.  Have a look or two if you have a strong stomach.

Kimmy took me to the emergency room and, well, there's not much to do.  I'm in a splint, it's swollen, and i'm depressed because not only will i be out for another month, but i am seriously considering quitting.

Bravo for your glorious football injury! Who else do you know that can say they have sacrificed a dislocated thumb for something they love so much? Don't answer that! Also, Kimmies are amazing, aren't they? I have one too. I cannot help but feel pity for those who do not.

No, other than a foot injury four years ago, it's just been dings. But now it's one thumb and then the other... ugh.

I am SO sorry to hear it. There's a unique howling frustration to, "But I'm trying to be healthy and active, dammit, and active keeps breaking me!"

Ow! Was this the same thumb as last time?

In my Durham days, my boss (his father played for Leeds Utd as a professional) managed to dislocate a big toe when he mistimed a tackle and kicked a opponent's calf.

In my own case, the back injury in 2004 was the last straw, but I came to the conclusion long before then that soccer wasn't something that made me less fit, because the injuries stopped me doing other forms of exercise.

Also #1: I dislocated the middle and ring fingers of my left hand in '99 during a game. I was lucky: the middle one popped back in by itself while I was removing my glove, and I managed to reset the other one pretty quickly (then spent several minutes trying to breathe, and not throw up).

Also #2: To possibly cheer you up, there are more dangerous sports out there (warning: video link) (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/7596528.stm).

That may be good news: you're less likely to have a recurring weakness there.

Ouch.

Did your teammates rough the guy up in the parking lot, at least?

Ah yes... just wait...

I recommend mountain walking and weight lifting.

First time I read this post, I saw "went back to play soccer" and skipped the rest... 8^)

Only noticed you'd injured yourself when I read the subsequent "cast" post. Ouch. Hope it mends well.

Yes, both are useful - the former is rough on me as I have COPD, but I still try my best when there is time to do simple things like Rancho San Antonio. Weight lifting is less probably, but I have found that simple things like exercising with simple two lb had dumbBells is gooder.

Currently I do three nights a week meeting my friend Roof at the Mountain View Cal Train Station and bicycling her home - as it gets me about 5+ miles of riding for general exercises...

Then there is always "Leap To Conclusions" - still one of my favorite exercises...
