Last night, in a "winner takes the division" showdown, i called for a ball, but my defender failed to hear me, kicked it away and bent back my thumb in the process, then ran through and kneed me in the head for good measure.  And then we lost the game by a goal.  Not the best of days...

I hope you explained to your defender that the opposition are supposed to beat you up. Did the knee to head do any harm? Last time I got one of those (from the opposition) I was out cold for about 2 minutes.

Nah, the goggles took some of it, so i was only mildly disoriented, other than the excruciating pain in my thumb. The only time i've had my bell rung hard was when another teammate on my other team knocked my forehead with his shin guard; i wasn't out cold, but i was definitely not functional for about a minute.
